The MZJ Ensemble is a new medium-sized symphonic wind group based in New York City which performs the compositions of M. Zachary Johnson as well as arrangements of existing repertoire. The group's presentation are educational concerts, including explanation of the music by the composer--covering its meaning, structure, instrumentation, and the nature of the artistic impetus behind it--with examples played by ensemble members. Some works are a view into "the composer's workshop" and are presented in excerpt form at the first presentation; others are performed in entirety after the educational portion of the presentation about each work. The ensemble gives several performances each season, featuring soloists from the group and guest soloists.
